    What is the correct lifting technique for manual handling?

    To avoid workplace injury, using the correct manual handling technique is vital. Typically, manual handling is split into 6 each steps to remember:

    1. Stop, think, and plan the load: How heavy is the load? Where is it going to be placed? Will assistance be required?
    2. Adopt a stable position: Feet apart, one leg slightly forward to maintain balance. 
    3. Ensure a good hold on the load: Keep the load as close to the body as possible, use any handles, keep the load in balance.
    4. Keep the load close: When lifting, keep the load close to the waist for as long as possible. Keep the heaviest side of the load next to the body.
    5. Keep your back straight: Slightly bend your back and knees at the start of the lift is preferable.
    6. Avoid twisting or leaning sideways: Avoid twisting your back or leaning sideways when your back is bent, keep your shoulders level, turning by moving your feet.
