During the festive season, businesses may be busy planning big social events to wrap up the year. But before you get too underway, don’t forget to keep inclusivity at the heart of your plans…

From spooky Halloween dos to the infamous Christmas party, this is the time to make sure we’re being as inclusive as possible when we’re in planning mode.

This includes being considerate of those with certain dietary requirements and personal choices. For example, festive parties are usually stocked full of alcohol, so it’s important to equally accommodate those who either can’t or choose not to drink. Plus, making sure you’re stocked up on vegetarian, vegan and halal options if you’re serving food.

Then, there’s being mindful of those who don’t observe certain traditions.

Because while the whole point of having social events at work is to have fun, it’s supposed to be special treat for everyone – so everyone should always feel able to participate.

But while everyone should have the option to participate, it doesn’t mean they have to. Not everyone celebrates Halloween or Christmas. So while it’s important to be inclusive, it’s also important to respect those that don’t want to join. And that’s okay too.

Another note - if you’re planning on letting employees come to work in fancy dress, don’t forget to remind employees to choose costumes that are appropriate for work. While you would hope they wouldn’t need reminding, an employee turning up in a costume that’s likely to offend or isn’t workplace-friendly could go down very badly.

So, make sure to establish those clear guidelines upfront.
