Retreat to success

At some point in our lives we are all presented with an opportunity to do something unexpected or ‘crazy’. Yet very few of us grab this chance, never mind turn it into a successful business.

That moment came for Richard and Amanda Hines 16 years ago when, in a moment of madness they decided to bid on a dilapidated Edwardian house in the picturesque Cornish fishing village of Mevagissey.

Originally planning for the exquisite house to become a relaxing family retreat, Richard and Amanda quickly realised that they couldn’t use it as much as would have liked to. With a savvy business mind, Amanda decided to turn this purchase into a business opportunity and looked into starting a holiday letting business.

A booming business

During the following years, the couple made a major personal investment in the project, including the purchase of the property next door and a more than one million pound renovation of the site. Once the renovation was complete they also expanded their business to include the site as a wedding venue.

Now looking to enhance their already high standards but with limited experience of hiring and managing employees, they faced a conundrum. They were looking to grow and become more successful but in order to achieve this they needed to bring in more employees, in the region of three full-time staff and during seasonal periods upwards of twenty casual employees. Concerned their limited knowledge in areas such as employee contracts and documentation could potentially open them up to pitfalls ahead they realised they needed guidance and support.

A successful search

Their focus and attention, naturally was on the day-to-day running of their successful business; areas such as employment law legislation and health and safety were both time consuming and complex.
