Remote Christmas party checklist: Four things to remember

2020 has been a tough year for everyone including the party planning committee.

They’ve come up against social distancing rules, colleagues working from home, and the uncertainty of planning anything during the pandemic. So, as well as everything else that’s happened this year, it's been difficult to plan the annual work Christmas party too.

Of course, the easiest option is to cancel the party. But, in the spirit of keeping Christmas alive, you may choose to organise a remote party.

If that’s your plan for this year, here are some tips for planning your remote Christmas party.

Christmas party checklist

1. Make attendance optional

The coronavirus pandemic has underlined the need for employers to keep their employees’ health & safety in mind. And, although a party could be considered a ‘treat’ for employees, many may have been struggling with work-related stresses and may not want to partake in a Christmas party this year. To best position yourself as an employer, make attendance optional.

2. Promote inclusivity

It’s important that party activities don’t exclude certain people. For example, particular employees might not drink alcohol. If so, plan a wide range of activities rather than one long virtual gin or wine tasting session.

3. Remind employees of discipline

Office, venue, or remote, the same staff Christmas party rules apply ─ and you remain responsible for your employees’ actions.

Remind party attendees of their responsibilities by emailing them beforehand. Outline what’s expected of them and highlight that the same conduct rules apply to a remote party as they would to an in-person event. Also, outline that the same disciplinary and grievance procedures apply.

4. Social media use

Employees can use their social media accounts in their own personal time, including at work social gatherings. However, you should ensure that employees’ use of social media doesn’t adversely affect the business’s reputation.

After all, waking up to negative headlines would be an added headache you don’t need.

In conclusion

In conclusion, a remote Christmas party offers a safe way to reward employees for their efforts during what has been a difficult year.

Colleagues can enjoy some downtime from the comfort of their homes, and you get to show you appreciate the work they've done.

Still, on the night, there should be a mutual sense of responsibility on the part of your business and employees.
