As from October 1st 2012, new regulations which were signed into law in November 2011 require that all HGVs, where the vehicle weight exceeds 7,500kg, must be fitted with a class VI front mirror, often called a Cyclops mirror. At present all HGVs registered after 2007 already must have such mirrors fitted.
This is required under the Road Traffic (Driving Mirrors – Additional Requirements for Heavy Goods Vehicles) Regulations 2011 (SI 457/11)
The fitment of a class VI front mirror has the potential to reduce fatalities and serious injuries from collisions between HGVs, cyclists and pedestrians. According to the Road safety Authority, in Ireland the number of such incidents is disproportionately high in the twelve year period between 1996 and 2008, 21 deaths and 14 serious injuries can be attributed to the inability of a HGV driver to see the pedestrian / cyclist as they passed in front of the vehicle’s blind zone
There is also an element of care required from pedestrians, cyclists and other road users to ensure that they do not walk into the drivers ‘blind spot’ – pedestrians should use pedestrian crossings and cyclists need to be aware of the rules of the road and how to protect themselves.
The presence of the mirror should become part of the basic vehicle checks which employers should ensure that all drivers carry out as part of their duties. If you need advice on occupational driving, vehicle checks or standards contact Peninsula Business Services on 01 855 5050.
