It was announced today by the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, that the National Internship Scheme Job Bridge has been expanded to take on 1,000 extra places, bringing the total positions to 6,000. The Scheme itself provides internship places for a 6 or 9 month period to those looking to gain valuable industry experience.
The Scheme which was launched last year has had its share of positive and negative feedback. The Department has cited evidence to show that 93% of interns would recommend the scheme to a friend, and how of the 2,000 people who have completed the scheme, 797 have gone into full-time employment. However critics of the scheme argue that it is an outlet for employers looking to hire cheap labour. The new extension of the scheme is being opened up to allow those in receipt of One Parent Family Payment and the Disability Allowance to take part in the scheme.
Whatever the view of the scheme it is a viable option for some employers when looking at taking on staff however there are guidelines that must be fulfilled by employers when looking to recruit.
