A piece in Tuesdays Irish Times revealed the working hours that a Junior Doctor must work through in order to gain experience in the sector.
It was however an eye opener from a HR standpoint as these workers can work 24+ hour shifts and receive minimum rest breaks and rates of pay, how can this be possible?
There is an exemption in the Organisation of Working Time Act, 1997 which states that the act shall not apply to "the activities of a doctor in training" amongst other exemptions.
We will be putting together a posting on exemptions under the working time act very soon, so watch this space for that, however for now the piece is an interesting read and gives an insight into the working conditions of these workers.
