Former employees of Multinational Company Glanbia have initiated legal proceedings against the Company for what they claim is a breach of contract.
It is reported that the Company have failed to pay a 3.5% increase in their pension in January of this year and the Group claim that in the early 1990s a deal was agreed for this increase to be paid during their pension. In return the workers have claimed they gave up pay increases and other benefits in lieu of this when they were still working in the Company.
The two sides have been in dispute over the increase since January. The former workers involved picketed Glanbia’s annual general meeting in Kilkenny in May, and you can click here to find out more information on the matter of picketing form one of our most recent postings.
Employers should be aware that with any employee they hold certain terms and conditions of employment that the Company is bound to unless the employee signs their agreement otherwise. the employees have a contractual right to these terms and a failure to abide by these from the employer could potentially expose the employer to the risk of a claim.
we would hope to have a posting on breach of contracts and an employers responsibilities in the coming days.
