Today saw workers from Bord na Mona take to the picket lines, as their one day strike action took place in the Midlands. Last week we discussed the issue of the strike action by workers and the rationale behind this industrial action. Although the strike was designed to minimise any disruption, Union Representatives have put the number at 1,200 members currently engaging in industrial action. According to RTE pickets are in place at the majority of sites in Longford, Westmeath, Laois, Offaly, Kildare and Roscommon, and this industrial action comes at a time when the semi-State firm is usually at the peak of its production season. Management and Unions have returned to the bargaining table in an effort to reach an agreement, however Management have warned that in order to meet the increased pay demands they may be forced to lay off some of the work force, which is in excess of 2,000 workers. We will continue to follow this story in the hopes that a settlement can be reached between Management and Workers.
