Introduction
Pachamama Group is a restaurant group in London. The family-owned business has grown from one to four restaurants within ten years, now employing around 140 employees in total.
With lots of employees – and only a small HR team – the business decided to work with Peninsula to reduce risk and help alleviate a heavy workload.
Maria, Head of People, discusses how she works with Peninsula to free up time and boost HR confidence within the business.
Setting up robust HR processes
When Maria first teamed up with Peninsula, she wanted to set up new, risk-free HR procedures for managers to follow.
The hospitality industry is known for its diverse workforce, with staff coming from a wide range of backgrounds – and Pachamama Group is no exception. The majority of staff are non-UK citizens, with differing rights to work in the UK. So, it’s extremely important that managers follow the correct right to work checks every time.
Peninsula helped Maria roll out robust processes to help managers carry out right to work checks. A Peninsula adviser created a document which explained the different types of right to work checks – including a diagram which mapped out what to do in different situations.
Two years later, managers still to refer this process when they hire staff.
Safer workplace processes
Peninsula helps rule out employment law risk with long-lasting processes to follow
Robust HR documentation
Managers streamline their day-to-day HR tasks with time-saving templates
Empowering managers with HR skills
Along with risk-free processes, the team managers also have access to Peninsula’s HR advice.
This means Maria can step back from smaller HR issues – and allow her management team to resolve them independently.
Their confidence and skills grow as a result, as managers learn to tackle staff situations without asking Maria for help each time.
Peninsula advisers guide Maria’s management team through employee relation issues. This allows managers to develop their skills to manage some HR jobs independently – allowing Maria to channel her energy into more strategic work.
Our managers learn from Peninsula
It’s a good learning experience for managers, rather than me only telling them all the time what to do. It gives them confidence

Plus, Maria finds that Peninsula helps her upskill the other member of the HR team, an adviser called Anastasia.
Anastasia began as an admin – with no previous HR experience. By giving Anastasia unlimited HR advice through Peninsula, Maria provides a platform where she can ask any question, at any time.
This boosts Anastasia’s confidence, and helps her tackle new or daunting situations with full support – even if Maria is away or too busy.
Our HR adviser started as an admin...
...so when I ask her to call Peninsula, she knows it's a learning process. She was recently managing a situation with Peninsula, and I had the confidence that the decisions were made correctly. I don't need to double check, I can step away and focus on more strategic projects

The value of Peninsula support
And Maria doesn’t need to worry about delegating smaller HR tasks to her team. That’s because she knows they have unlimited, expert support at all times.
As a result, Maria can free up her time for more strategic projects.
For example, she can now focus on implementing new learning and development strategies within the business.
With so much extra time to focus on these projects, Maria feels that she is able to bring extra value back to the business. And Pachamama Group enjoy it that added value for less than half the price of hiring another HR professional…
Maria
With Peninsula, we are paying even less than half the salary of another HR person. So for us, it’s justified – as we are growing and learning as a result too
