As AI continues to evolve, its integration into the workplace has become more prominent, reshaping the way some businesses get work done.

A recent global study finds that Canadian small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are unsure of the uses of AI in the workplace. Peninsula Group’s annual global client survey shows that there is concern surrounding the uses and benefits of AI in the workplace.

Have businesses adopted AI use in the workplace?

The study found that 65% of SMBs in Canada have not yet implemented AI into their work operations. But they are not alone, over 50% of SMBs in the UK, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand have also not incorporated AI use in the workplace

There seems to be hesitation across the board concerning the uses of AI. There may be multiple reasons for this, such as the impact on staff morale, the impact on work quality, and the risk of losing intellectual property. The biggest concern Canadian SMBs seem to have is the security risks.

For businesses using AI, what are some of the key functions?

There are some key benefits to AI use in the workplace that could help with efficiency. Some of those benefits include help with administrative tasks, creative writing, and drafting internal communications.

Small and Medium Businesses appear to mostly use AI for admin tasks. However, based on the study, there has been a 52% reduction in AI usage for admin tasks from 2023. This could be related to the security risk concerns that many employers have, or being unsure of trusting AI use in their business.

How do employers view the role of AI in the workplace?

While some SMBs see AI as a useful tool, they are still hesitant to try it. Globally, there is a 21% increase in fear of the unknown. There is also a 19% increase in employers saying AI is useful, but they don't think it will overtake traditional ways of work.

In Canada, the hesitation comes from fear of the unknown. From 2022-2023 to 2023-2024 there has been a 31% increase highlighting the big concern that many employers have with AI use.

Is there concern that AI will reduce or replace the number of people in your business?

The study revealed that 41% of SMBs in Canada believe that AI will not replace or reduce the number of employees in the business.

While AI continues to make its way into businesses, it is not a replacement for employees, but rather a tool to enhance their roles. AI is good at taking over repetitive tasks, but there are multiple skills that still need to be done by humans.
